Brown Water From Faucet: Is It Safe and How Do You Fix It?

Cold water only, whole house

Brown or yellow water at every cold tap usually comes from the city side: hydrant flushing, a main break or maintenance stirs up sediment in the mains. Run cold water for 10 to 20 minutes. If it clears, it was the utility.

Hot water only

Rust in hot water alone points to the water heater. The anode rod is spent and the tank is corroding from the inside. Replacing the anode may help; a tank older than 8 years usually needs water heater replacement.

One faucet only

Rust from a corroded galvanized branch line or a failing faucet. Replacing that section of pipe or the faucet solves it.

Persistent brown water

If your home has galvanized steel supply pipes, they rust from the inside and shed flakes every time pressure changes. Cleaning does not help. A whole-house repipe with PEX or copper is the permanent fix and also restores water pressure.

Is it safe?

Discolored water from iron is unpleasant but not usually a health hazard. Avoid drinking it or doing laundry until it clears. If it persists more than a day, call a plumber.

Get it diagnosed

Our plumbers test water at several points to tell utility issues apart from pipe or water heater problems, anywhere in Florida.
